The Free State Bar is committed to changing the composition of the Bar's membership so as to be representative of South African society, and to that end, accommodates a fair selection of pupil advocates representative of the race and gender composition of South African society, and encourages fair and equitable briefing patterns.

Advocates are organized into societies in the major centers in South Africa, historically known as "Bars". As the body representing the advocates' profession, the purpose of the Free State Bar is to maintain professional standards and conduct among practicing advocates, and to enforce discipline amongst its members.
